The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola” route, is one of the most popular paths for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers hut accommodations, making it a relatively comfortable option. Below is a detailed 5-day itinerary for the Marangu Route.
Route Itinerary
Acclimatization: Consider adding an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut to improve your chances of reaching the summit.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout the trek.
Layering: Dress in layers to adapt to changing temperatures.
Fitness: Ensure you are physically prepared for the trek with cardio and strength training.
Guides and Porters: Rely on your guides and porters for support, advice, and motivation.

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Itinerary:
Morning: Meet your guide and team at the Marangu Gate for registration and briefing. Start your trek through the lush rainforest.
Afternoon: Reach Mandara Hut, where you will stay overnight. Option to take a short walk to Maundi Crater for views of the surrounding landscape.
Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Heathland
Itinerary:
- Morning: After breakfast, continue your ascent through the forest to the heathland zone. Enjoy the changing scenery and plant life.
- Afternoon: Arrive at Horombo Hut, with views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Overnight at Horombo Hut.
Distance: 10 km / 6.2 miles
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Itinerary:
- Morning: Hike through the moorland and alpine desert, passing the last water point at 4,130m. The landscape becomes more barren as you approach Kibo Hut.
- Afternoon: Arrive at Kibo Hut, located at the base of the Kibo Crater wall. Prepare for the summit attempt and rest early.
Distance: 20 km / 12.5 miles (4 km ascent, 16 km descent)
Hiking Time: 10-14 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone
Itinerary:
- Midnight: Start the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. The trek is steep and slow as you navigate through the dark, aiming to reach the summit by sunrise.
- Sunrise: Arrive at Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
- Morning: After taking photos and celebrating at the summit, descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and breakfast.
- Afternoon: Continue descending to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.
Distance: 20 km / 12.5 miles
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Itinerary:
- Morning: After breakfast, descend through the heathland and montane forest to the Marangu Gate.
- Afternoon: Complete your climb and sign out at the gate. Receive your summit certificates if you reached Gilman’s Point or Uhuru Peak. Transfer back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
